Look the painter up for free on the Contractors State License Board’s Check a License page at cslb.ca.gov, by license number, business name or person’s name. A painter should hold a C-33 Painting and Decorating license, and the record shows whether it’s active, bonded and covered for workers’ comp.
When a painter needs a license
For any job of $1,000 or more, counting labor and materials together. Since January 1, 2025 (a law called AB 2622), someone without a license can take a job under $1,000 only if it needs no permit and they don’t hire anyone to help. A whole-house paint job is well over that line.
What to look for on the record
- The status reads “This license is current and active.”
- The classification is C-33, Painting and Decorating.
- A contractor’s bond is on file, with the bond company named.
- Workers’ compensation insurance is listed, with its policy dates.
- The business name and address match the company you’re talking to.
- If there’s a public complaint or citation, the record shows a link to it. Read it and ask the painter about it.
Before you sign
California’s license board sets these rules for home improvement contracts:
- The contract is in writing, and so is every change to it.
- A down payment can’t be more than $1,000 or 10 percent of the price, whichever is less.
- You can cancel within three business days of signing (five if you’re 65 or older), with a few exceptions.
