Plan on about $2.20 to $4.40 per square foot to paint the outside of a house, and about $1 to $4 per square foot of floor to paint the inside. On a 2,000 square foot home that comes to roughly $4,400 to $8,800 for the exterior and $2,000 to $8,000 for the interior, using This Old House’s 2026 cost guides.
Those are national ranges, not N Style’s price list. What your house costs depends mostly on how much prep it needs, so the only real number is a written estimate from someone who has walked around it. N Style Painting’s estimates are free.

What moves a Sacramento quote up or down
Prep matters most. On an exterior, N Style’s written process scrapes, sands and cleans the wood, primes the wood trim and siding with a flexible (elastomeric) primer, and caulks the joint where the walls meet the eaves all the way around the house. A house that needs a lot of that costs more than one that doesn’t.
Soft, rotted boards have to be replaced before paint goes on, and some only show up once old paint is scraped off. See dry rot repair before painting.
N Style sprays stucco and then back-rolls it to push paint into the texture. Smooth siding gets sprayed without back-rolling, because a roller leaves a stipple on it.
Two-story walls, lots of trim and doors, and a big change from a dark color to a light one all add time.
Do you need a permit to paint a house in Sacramento?
Usually not. The City of Sacramento lists painting among the work that doesn’t need a building permit, unless the house is in a design review or preservation district or is a historic landmark. If you live in an HOA, check its color rules before you pick colors.
What customers say about the price
“I contacted Nick to get an estimate to paint the entire inside of our new 3300sf home. Nick responded quickly, professionally and was out the next day to give me a quote. He was able to get me a quote within 48 hours and to my surprise they were very affordable.”
“I knew that this was an extremely labor intensive job and I felt that the quote was absolutely fair for the amount of effort it was going to take to get this painted lady back into shape.”
“Painted the exterior of my entire house. The job was high quality, the value was good, the close out / touchup was impeccable. The owners were knowledgeable and their guys were friendly and meticulous. 10/10”

Questions people ask
Are N Style Painting’s estimates free?
Yes. In the Sacramento area call 916-234-3551 or book a time online, and someone comes out to look at the house before giving you a written price.
Do I need a permit to paint my house in Sacramento?
Usually not. The City of Sacramento lists painting as work that doesn’t need a building permit, unless the house is in a design review or preservation district or is a historic landmark.
Why are two painting quotes for the same house so far apart?
Usually because they don’t include the same work. Ask each painter to write down the prep (scraping, priming bare wood, caulking, rot repair), the paint brand and line, and the number of coats, then compare them line by line.
How long does it take to paint a house?
It depends on the size of the house and how much prep it needs. On a 3,300 square foot interior, one N Style customer wrote that the crew started two days after the quote and finished within a few days.
How do I check a painter’s license in California?
Search the painter’s license number or business name on the Contractors State License Board’s free Check a License page at cslb.ca.gov. A painter should hold a C-33 license that shows as current and active.
