What dry rot is
Dry rot is a fungus that grows where wood stays damp, and it breaks the wood down until it’s soft. Left alone it can lead to structural damage, which is why N Style treats it with a fungicide and replaces the damaged wood rather than painting over it.
Where it turns up
On an exterior job N Style scrapes, sands and primes the fascia boards under the roof edge, the siding, the window trim and the trim band between floors. That’s usually when soft boards show up.
How it’s priced
By how much wood is soft, and some of it only shows once the old paint comes off. California’s license board requires every change to a home improvement contract to be in writing, so ask that your contract says how rot found during prep will be priced.
